The new President of the United States run and won through the platform of ‘America First’ and Isolationism, that is unprecedented for a country, which built its institutions as a champion of Human Right and world police for the enforcement of peace and stability across the Globe.
Ethiopia is one of the largest recipient of foreign aid, to which the United States is among its key donor. Depending on who you are asking the implications of potential shoning of Aid and humanitarian assistance is going to have tremendous implications for the country in the coming years.
In one hand the dictatorial government, that has been extensively reliant on the united states support to hold on to the grip of power, will have less support to further marginalize its own citizens and expand its tight control even further. Having lost trust by the majority of its citizens for the cracking down of peaceful protesters and abuse of power, the government is already at a troubling time. Who knows how the loss of aid and assistance from the most powerful country on the planet further hurt its cause?!
If indeed the United States decided to axe its support to the regime, it will be a great win for everyone who strives to ensure human rights in Ethiopia.
In the other hand, Should the US decide to abandon its East African major ally under the new Administration, many humanitarian projects will be halted which have a paramount importance to the poor and needy in various parts of the country.
Whatever happens during this administration, one thing is for certain, things will never be the same!
