Being a citizen of one of the most confused state in the world is surely irritating to the point you lose hope in the very fabric of your nation as you see gullible, stupid individuals leading your country without the slightest hint of knowledge of what they are doing. I’m not sad because we are not democratic neither am I sad because we are still poor; I’m sad because we are not showing a commitment and strong intention to build a system- a system capable of building institutions that are pivotal in making a state work. #FreeZone9Bloggers was an active, organized hashtag that calls for the release of 9 bloggers who were detained in ” Terrorism charges” since April 2019. In their 39th appearance since their arrest, they were set free today. (4 of them were set free in previous court appearances).
The charges, as everyone understands are purely politically motivated and are carried out to silence the ever weakening opposition forces. This is evident in the fact that the charges against these bloggers were suddenly dropped by the public prosecutor without any explanation whatsoever. Right now the scary reality in Ethiopia is you get detained, appear before the ceremonial court for 100 times and then get released without any explanation if you are lucky or rotten in jail for the unforeseeable future. I’m happy no further harm is waiting for this individuals who did nothing but write in areas where they think need improvement but are we supposed to thank the government for taking away their right and give back to them? To start with this wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for the excessive control of the executive branch of the government over the judiciary. Our Judicial system is by far one of the most incompetent systems in the world taking the whim and wish of the executive.
It’s another day of Frustration but a happy day for the bloggers and their families.
And people ask me if I want to practice Law in Ethiopia?!
